We’re pleased to present New England Book Artists’ 2020 Zine Swap results! Thanks to everyone for being part of the 1st NEBA Zine Swap.
After several box, folio, and slipcover concepts, this elegant pillow box became the final choice for housing the collections. The simplicity, its perfect dimensions, and that deep red cover stock – the winner was obvious. NEBA’s fantastic circular logo printed as stickers added the final touch. Please enjoy this zine gallery with zine titles and artist’s statements!
Marie Canaves – It’s ALL in a Name
It’s ALL in a Name is this logophile’s meandering meditation on the word “trump” in Latin, the language of the fallen Roman Empire. (2-sided)
Dennis Dahill – Corona 2020 at-a-glance
This zine uses a desk calendar spattered with corona-like ink drops to represent Covid-19’s intrusive blot on my life.
Susan Gaylord – Ruth Asawa
I am so pleased to have this opportunity to share inspiring words from artist, educator, and activist Ruth Asawa and recommend reading her biography, Everything She Touched by Marilyn Chase.
Ania Gilmore – Walls
Digital book inspired by Constantine P. Cavafy (Alexandria, Egypt) poem “Walls” with details of daily sketches as a meditation memoir during the significant year of 2020.
Rebecca Goodale – Animals
This book is a black and white translation of a more colorful book that was inspired by a visit to a local wildlife park.
Cristina Hajosy – Merkin: An Illustrated Guide
Dating back to the 1450s, the pubic wig initially provided a shield against stigma, and later, an erotic accessory in our contemporary culture.
Cristina Hajosy – Steps to Abstraction – Vagonion Edition
This zine came from a merger between my ongoing zine, Vagonion (a feminist, visual rant) and the art teacher in me and shows 7 steps from realism to abstraction.
Carolyn Letvin – Sheep
Because I find sheep to be engaging and compelling, they have become my primary source of imagery, allowing me to explore paint application, surface texture, composition and color in a way that satisfies me.
Carolyn Letvin – Interiors
Because I find everyday interior spaces engaging and compelling, I paint them.
Susan Marsh – Signs of the Times
I was intrigued by the various ways the required six foot physical distance during the pandemic was visually depicted.
Alyssa Laurel Ringler – Ode to New York
A modest tribute to a great city that has been ravaged by coronavirus.
Sara David Ringler – Locked in
Isolated and locked into my own thoughts I gave voice to some of the things I was feeling and thinking.
Gail Smuda – Blame
Blame is about the tendency for humans to find someone outside of themselves to blame for all that goes wrong in life.
Alice Stanne – Schrödinger’s Apartments
The pandemic paradox – we are both simultaneously alive and frozen (as expressed by cats).
Stephanie Stigliano – Share the Water
This zine was my teaching sample at a STEAM workshop for children in San Diego; the theme was building a sustainable future.
A note from Cristina Hajosy – NEBA’s Zine Swap Mistress/Admin:
Thanks to everyone for being part of the first NEBA Zine Swap. What a great range of subjects and styles with thoughtful and creative designs…and so much humor. An amazing collection!
Looking forward to NEBA’s 2021 swap – due on September 15th
Start your zines now, or wait for the perfect Summertime moment. More coming with a new blog post, “Zine Basics” with history, collecting, trends, pdf patterns…cool!
We see this annual swap growing, and I’m personally thrilled to share my appreciation zine book arts. But more fundamentally, I see this swap as another way to spark NEBA collaboration and to increase connections with NEBA members and followers. The digital version of the swap for 2020 showed that even in the most difficult times, zines still thrive. We’ll hope for an in-person swap meet around September 15, but regardless…ZINE ON!
