Suffragists Speak: Hand-Lettered Quotes to Celebrate The 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage
8.25 x 6″
32 pages, black and white
A hand-lettered collection of quotations by women involved in the suffrage movement from 1848 to 1920. Using the first Woman’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848 as the starting point, the journey to suffrage for women in the United States took 72 years. The 19th Amendment stated that “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.” Congress passed the Amendment in June 1919 and it became law on August 18, 1920 when Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify it. The journey was long, arduous, and complex. Issues of race and class arose as generations of diverse women grappled with abolition, immigration, and temperance, as well as tactical issues such as when and if to compromise. While the women’s patience was frequently tested, their resolve never wavered. As we engage in our present and contemplate our future, let us take inspiration from their bravery and commitment.
20% of the sales from Suffragists Speak will be donated to Fair Fight, the organization founded by Stacey Abrams which fights to protect the vote.
The original printing had an early purchaser keepsake for the first 20 collectors. The keepsake accordion books were made from original lettering not used in the book. Susan’s packaging and even her business cards are just lovely.
