BIO
Book artist and letterpress printer Gwendolyn Holbrow has used media from bronze and Barbie dolls to ink and paper in her exploration of the connections and boundaries between substance and spirit, self and other, and the workings of time. In addition to earning bachelor’s degrees in Linguistics and Studio Art, she has studied bookbinding at the North Bennet Street School and letterpress printing and book arts at the Massachusetts College of Art, and interned at historic Hatch Show Print in Nashville.
In addition to NEBA, Holbrow is a member of the Amalgamated Printers Association, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, and the International Union Of Mail Artists. Her award-winning work, often humorous and always thought-provoking, has appeared in museums and galleries throughout New England and beyond. She lives, makes, and plays bluegrass fiddle in the greater Boston area.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Books are miraculous! An object that can be held in one hand, made of little more than wood pulp and pigment, can have the power to transport you to another reality. Books are a unique time-based medium needing no outside power source, no projectors, no amplifiers, no screen; all of these are within the mind of the reader. We humans are storytelling animals, and books empower us to share our stories across vast time and distance.
A book is also a machine. It has moving parts, it has a job to do. For me, the combined challenges of conceptualizing a message and building a machine to convey it are irresistible. I hope my books will transport you to another world, and that you will return from that world with something of lasting value.
