BIO
Julie Shaw Lutts is a book artist living and working on the East Coast who has shown widely in both solo and group exhibits.”Her pieces are endlessly captivating and uncommonly beautiful. Her dedication to the work is evident in the care she gives each item, flawlessly executed and responsibly presented regardless of form or intention. She is a visual anthropologist.”
Her work is in collections both public and private, including The Tate Britain, Bodleian Libraries University of Oxford, The University of Michigan Library of Art & Architecture, Winchester College UK, Emory University, Oberlin, Savannah College of Art & Design, UCLA, Bowdoin College, Baylor University, Cardiff University and Tufts University among others. Lutts is also the creator of the first artist book app, called The CuRiOus Alphabet. The app is free in the Apple Store & is a stop motion animation of the alphabet created with found objects and ephemera from her studio.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I am a book artist who creates one of a kind artist books and sometimes small editions. I thrive on challenging the idea of what an artist book is by using unconventional elements & objects in my books. My work explores themes of history, women, family, geography, time, mathematics, memory and science.
I am inspired by vintage items both strange and simple, including maps, diaries, tintypes, photo-graphs, handwritten letters, odd medical devices, keepsakes and relics, found in various flea markets around the world as well as everyday objects such as coffee cups, gloves, plates and toys, which I can create a book out of. Each found object I use has its own story which informs the narratives I create.
My artist books are often housed in vintage boxes or containers that I have found at flea markets and tag sales. I love the idea of wondering what’s inside and the process of lifting the lid, or opening the box to explore the book’s pages. My artist books are very often able to be arranged and manipulated by the reader. The pages of my books can be anything from traditional paper to a woman’s vintage kid gloves to coffee cups or a piece of cake.
As artist of the Week (June 2020) at Jaffee Center for Book Arts, Florida Atlantic University Library, her video about her artist’s book, The Vote was featured.
The book is made from found objects and commemorates this year’s centennial of the passage of the 19th Amendment, extending voting rights to women. The book is housed in a found box. The pages are vintage kid gloves.
