Continuing on with my artist bookmaking as sculpture, I began exploring more figurative forms and objects. With ‘my mother’s garden’ as my thematic inspiration, I photographed the poppies – for their grandeur, color and beauty, and also for their symbol as remembrance. Again, I cut, folded and sewed to create a dress-like form and sculpture. Having no previous dressmaking experience, this was my first attempt. It has since prompted me to explore even larger dress-like shapes and forms.

Curious about color and line and shape and form, and wishing to create something joyous and fun, I photographed curved paper sculptures in many hues of color and light. The playful abstract structure of the explosion book felt like the just-right form for the desired expression. I cut and glued and re-created and re-imagined into a new and dynamic abstract form.

This was my first exploration into artist bookmaking as sculpture. In those long, solitary days of Covid lockdown, I walked and photographed the sky. It was ever-present, with only its colors and cloud formations changing. I began working with that sky, cutting, folding, sewing and re-imagining it into an abstract quilt-like structure that can be re-configured and re-formed.
