ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My one of a kind artist books are portals to both nonfiction and fictional narratives that dissolve into my visual translations.
I have created art books since I was 12. It has always run parallel with my more formal paintings and prints. These books are my playground of experimentation, developing ideas and techniques to be used for other work.
Upon current reflection my artist books have become more conceptual and physically expressive than my paintings and prints! It is why I am concentrating on this part of my practice.
My books are usually built in child’s board books. I also create their encasements from unexpected found objects. The books are an amalgamation of drawing, etching, collage, sewing, photo, texts, original family keepsakes, and fabrics.
Themes focus strongly on my 1st generation Hungarian identity, my parents immigration in 1956, Hungarian history, and stories. My other topics concern Women’s issues such as abuse and body dismorphia. I have books of poetry (mine and other poets), with accompanying mixed media. Lastly, I make little books of absurd stories and dark humor.
My attraction and need to communicate through books are derived from my father who was a rare book dealer and rare book librarian. Early on, I was exposed to the power and importance of every aspect of books. Above all I have a great reverence for books. I love the freedom the book provides, a wonderful flexible visual repository of all my visual narratives.
Some of the books are available on Blurb.
