A psychic once told me that I’d always live near water; she was right. And it was the deep waters surrounding Cape Cod, my home of many years, which served as the inspiration for Drifting. I photographed moon jellyfish, creatures which mesmerized me with the beauty of their transparent, glowing, forms and graceful, gentle movements. To evoke the sea, I chose an accordion format which lends itself to different, zig-zag configurations, obliquely suggesting the movement of water. The paper bordering each picture has been embedded with natural elements evoking the tossing, tumbling, and swaying of seaweed in the ocean. I chose a monochromatic palette of rich blacks, deep greys, shimmering silver and gold, along with six different types of papers, to allude to the unfathomable, mysterious depths of the sea.
