My parents dream was to build their own house. They looked through magazines and found home-building plans, then hired contractors to perform the various building tasks, managing the overall process themselves to keep costs down. In that process they unfortunately cut a few corners, including skimping on the foundation. Over time this led to the destabilization of the structure — and ultimately, shortly after they passed away, to the demolition of the house itself. What was intended as an enduring dream, something to pass on, never met that expectation. Arguably a sad story, though since they did not live to see the demolition they house was indeed a dream fulfilled in their lifetime.
This book is a reflection on their story.
