Current Events is made of discarded Gelli-prints and collagraphs from other projects. It is a response to the omnipresent political backdrop of our lives. Stigliano shaped the proofs into fish, adding details and a red herring to the front and back. “I use the sculptural and tactile quality of books; art that is held in the hand can reach the viewer in a visceral way. We are starved for physical contact: to touch, to hold, to interact in time and space.” The process of making a book requires assembling parts in a unified construction. A book is built from diverse parts in which each has a voice; the scale, the material, the structure, and the unfolding narrative. The artist is making an intimate connection with the reader and viewer. It is fun to play with inside/outside, front/back, and movement among the various elements.
