THE WISH YOU WERE HERE PROJECT
Seven book arts organizations came together to celebrate “where you live” through a hand-crafted, USPS-compliant, postcard exchange and freestyle bookmaking project. Groups included: San Diego Book Arts (SDBA), Bay Area Book Artists (BABA), North Redwoods Book Arts Guild (NORBAG), Puget Sound Book Artists (PSBA), PaperWorks, Santa Fe Book Arts Group (SFBAG) and New England Book Artists (NEBA).
This was a one-of-a-kind opportunity to share the love, perception, or impression of where each artist lives with fellow book artists. It was a fun way to welcome fellow artists into our homes, yards, neighborhoods, cities, regions, or states. And it was a cool way to take a virtual journey through abodes or environs–from the Pacific Coast through the Southwest and up into New England.
How it worked:
Groups of 16 artists were matched into mini collaboratives. Each artist designed and mailed “where you live” themed postcards to their group members. Each artist designed and crafted their own “Wish You Were Here” book that displays all 16 postcards from their group. These books, organized by group numbers, are presented in this online exhibition. Between the groups of individual book artists are “break pages” that share some of the back story, the workshops, the artists sharing more in-depth details about their techniques and motivations, and more. Clicking on any participants in the main gallery will lead to their artist listing with additional images. Enjoy!
