NEBA Members enjoyed a private tour of the Wild/LIFE book arts exhibit at the North Bennet Street School in Boston’s North End. We ooohed and ahhhed over Penny Hall and James Reid-Cunningham’s gorgeous structures! The gallery space feels open and bright. The craftsmanship of the display cabinets and the thoughtful installation elevate the viewers’ experience and impart a respectful adoration of these amazing books.
This traveling exhibit from the Guild of Book Workers features 45 hand-bound design bindings, interpreting the theme of “wildlife” in a variety of ways—from literal or abstract, to humorous or serious. On view January 10 – February 12, 2022 in Boston, plus virtual exhibit that’s ongoing. Its next destination is the American Bookbinders Museum, San Francisco, CA from June 2 – August 7, 2021.
“In a biological sense, wildlife describes the myriad of creatures sharing this planet, interacting and adapting, all connected to each other and their environment. ‘Wild’ also describes an untamable essence that survives despite the constraints of society and culture. As craftspeople, knowledge of materials and keen observation of how they behave (and often how they refuse to comply) is integral to our practice; reminders of how traditional bookbinding materials originate in nature.”
Thanks to Jeff Altepeter, NBSS’s bookbinding department head, for taking some time with us. Your book arts program and facilities are fantastic.
