BIO
I hold a BA in Literature (minor in art) from Bennington College and a MA in English from New York University. I have done graduate work in education at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and art education at Massachusetts College of Art.
For many years I taught K-8 art. An ideal retirement job has been volunteering as a docent at the Peabody Essex Museum.
An early focus was colored pencil, with an emphasis on botanical drawings.
For the last 25 years I’ve been a printmaker, exploring how monotypes offer a rich combination of the immediacy and precision of drawing with the process and surprise of printmaking.
During this time, I have been inspired by workshops in both printmaking and book arts with Ron Pokrasso, Susan Rostov, Joel Janowitz and Annie Silverman.
I have exhibited my work with the Monotype Guild of New England, the New England Society of Botanical Artists, the North of Boston Print Collaborative, the Newburyport Art Association, and the Marblehead Art Association.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Art and books have been important throughout my life. Originally from the New Jersey coast, I have lived near the ocean for much of my life. The sources of my work include the forms and textures of the natural landscape. Coast, salt marsh, and rivers are recurring themes as well as plants from my garden and botanical gardens visited in American and European cities.
Bookmaking has offered exciting mixed-media possibilities of combining monotype with drawing, collage, stitchery, and natural objects. Books also follow a storyline of multiple images not possible in a print or drawing, a way to move through time.
